An instance can use all the cores and memory the operating system provides, and you get full availability groups with multiple databases and up to 8 secondary replicas, online and resumable index operations, read-ahead and advanced scanning, and NUMA-aware memory allocation. SQL Server 2022 adds Enterprise-only query tuning such as degree of parallelism feedback and cardinality estimation feedback, plus hardware-offloaded backup compression with Intel QuickAssist Technology.
All editions of 2022 also gain ledger tables, the link to Azure SQL Managed Instance, Azure Synapse Link and Microsoft Purview integration. Enterprise runs on Windows Server 2016 through 2025 and on Linux. Mainstream support lasts until January 11, 2028 and extended support until January 11, 2033. Typical buyers run large OLTP systems, data warehouses or many consolidated databases on a single host.
