Windows Server 2025 Standard is the current long-term servicing release of Windows Server, released in November 2024 and supported with security updates until November 14, 2034. This 32-core license covers 32 physical cores. As with earlier versions, licensing is per core: count all physical cores in the server, apply the minimum of 8 per processor and 16 per server, and license that total. A new single-processor server with 16 or fewer cores needs 16 core licenses.
Standard includes rights to run two Windows Server virtual machines on a fully licensed host, plus the Hyper-V host. Each further pair of VMs needs every core licensed again. In 2025, Standard also supports GPU partitioning on standalone servers, including live migration of GPU-enabled VMs for planned maintenance. Users and devices that access the server need Windows Server 2025 CALs, sold separately from this core license.
New in Windows Server 2025 are SMB over QUIC in every edition, Active Directory improvements, faster NVMe storage performance and hotpatching, which installs many security updates without a restart and is available as a paid Azure Arc service. Hardware requirements are stricter than before: the processor must support the SSE4.2 and POPCNT instructions, and the minimum memory is 2 GB.
