Windows Server 2022 Standard is the per-core business edition of Windows Server 2022, used for Active Directory, file services, IIS and application workloads. This 64-core license covers 64 physical cores. Every server must have all of its physical cores licensed, with a minimum of 8 per processor and 16 per server. Packs smaller than 16 cores are for topping up: an 18-core server, for example, needs 16 cores plus a 2-core pack.
A fully licensed Standard server can run two Windows Server virtual machines in addition to the Hyper-V host. For each extra pair of VMs, license all physical cores again, so a 16-core host running six VMs needs 48 core licenses. Datacenter is usually more economical once VM counts climb. Windows Server CALs for users or devices are a separate requirement and must be version 2022 or later.
Windows Server 2022 focuses on security. It supports Secured-core server on certified hardware (TPM 2.0, Secure Boot and virtualization-based security), enables TLS 1.3 by default, adds DNS over HTTPS and supports AES-256 encryption and compression for SMB. Hyper-V adds nested virtualization on AMD processors. Microsoft mainstream support runs until October 13, 2026, and security updates continue until October 14, 2031.
