Windows Server 2022 Datacenter is the edition for dense virtualization, failover clusters and software-defined datacenters. This 2-core license covers 2 physical cores. Datacenter follows the same core rules as Standard: license every physical core, with at least 8 per processor and 16 per server. Smaller packs top up servers above the minimum, so a host with two 10-core processors needs 16 cores plus two 2-core packs, 20 in total.
Once every core is licensed, Datacenter allows unlimited Windows Server virtual machines and Hyper-V containers on that host. This is the key difference from Standard, which covers only two VMs per full set of core licenses. Datacenter suits hosts running many VMs or clusters where VMs move between nodes. Windows Server 2022 CALs for each user or device are still required and are not included.
Datacenter-only features in Windows Server 2022 include Storage Spaces Direct, shielded virtual machines with Host Guardian Hyper-V support and the Network Controller for software-defined networking. Datacenter hosts also activate Windows Server guests through Automatic Virtual Machine Activation. This license is for Datacenter, not Datacenter: Azure Edition, which is a separate edition for Azure and Azure Local. Security updates continue until October 14, 2031.
