Windows Server 2016 Standard is the general purpose edition of Windows Server 2016, used for Active Directory, file and print sharing, IIS web hosting and line of business applications. This 64-core license covers 64 physical processor cores. Microsoft licenses Standard per core, with a minimum of 8 cores per processor and 16 cores per server, and every physical core in the machine must be licensed. A single-processor server with only 4 or 6 cores still needs 16 core licenses.
Once all physical cores are licensed, Standard lets you run two Windows Server virtual machines plus the Hyper-V host itself. To run two more VMs on the same host, you license every core a second time, so a 16-core host with four VMs needs 32 Standard core licenses. Hosts that will run many VMs are usually better served by Datacenter. Each user or device that connects to the server also needs a Windows Server CAL, which is separate from this core license.
Windows Server 2016 introduced Windows Server and Hyper-V containers, nested virtualization, the Nano Server option and Windows Defender Antivirus built into the operating system. In this version, Storage Spaces Direct, Storage Replica and shielded virtual machines are limited to Datacenter. Microsoft ended mainstream support on January 11, 2022, and extended support (security updates) ends January 12, 2027, so 2016 Standard is best for keeping an existing application or environment that specifically requires it.
