Windows Server 2016 Datacenter is the top edition of Windows Server 2016, built for virtualization hosts and private cloud infrastructure. This 64-core license covers 64 physical processor cores. Like Standard, Datacenter is licensed per core: you must license every physical core, with a minimum of 8 per processor and 16 per server. A dual-processor host with two 10-core CPUs therefore needs 20 core licenses, while a host with two 4-core CPUs still needs 16.
The main reason to choose Datacenter is unlimited virtualization. When all physical cores are licensed, you can run as many Windows Server virtual machines and Hyper-V containers on that host as the hardware allows. Standard only allows two VMs per full set of core licenses, so Datacenter becomes the more practical option on dense hosts. The license covers the server software only. Users and devices still need Windows Server CALs, purchased separately.
Several Windows Server 2016 features are available only in Datacenter: Storage Spaces Direct for hyper-converged storage, Storage Replica for synchronous replication between servers or sites, shielded virtual machines with Host Guardian Hyper-V support, and the Network Controller for software-defined networking. Datacenter hosts can also activate guest VMs through Automatic Virtual Machine Activation. Extended support for Windows Server 2016 ends January 12, 2027.
