SQL Server 2016 Standard is Microsoft's mid-tier database edition, sold here as a 15 user pack: one server license plus 15 SQL Server user CALs under the Server + CAL model. It is the usual choice for small businesses whose accounting, ERP, CRM or practice management software outgrew the 10 GB database limit of SQL Server Express.
Service Pack 1 for SQL Server 2016 brought many former Enterprise programming features to Standard, including In-Memory OLTP, columnstore indexes, table partitioning, data compression, Always Encrypted, row-level security and dynamic data masking. Version 2016 also introduced Query Store, temporal tables, built-in JSON functions and basic availability groups, which give Standard a two-node, single-database failover option. A Standard instance uses up to 24 cores and 128 GB of buffer pool memory.
Microsoft support for SQL Server 2016 ended on July 14, 2026, so new security updates are only available to organizations enrolled in Microsoft's paid Extended Security Updates program. It runs on Windows Server 2012 through 2019 and on Windows 10. Buy it when a vendor application specifically requires SQL Server 2016; for new deployments, a newer version is the better long-term choice.
